CustomInk vs SWAGO: the same self-serve, without the retail markup

CustomInk is the best-known name in online custom tees. SWAGO offers the same path, a Design Studio and checkout with no phone call, at manufacturer-direct pricing with flat rush fees. And when the order outgrows a cart, a person takes over. Here is the side by side.

Pick CustomInk when you need a single shirt or a run under 12 pieces and have two weeks to wait.

Pick SWAGO for everything else. Design it yourself in the Design Studio and check out at 10pm with no phone call, or hand the brief to an account manager. Either way it prints in-house in Miami at manufacturer-direct pricing, with a flat rush fee instead of a percentage of your order.

Round 1

Pricing: retail brand vs manufacturer-direct

CustomInk is a retailer. Between the shirt and your invoice sit national advertising, a large customer service operation, and the margin that funds both. None of that is wrong. It is what lets them serve millions of first-time buyers well. It is also baked into the per-shirt price.

SWAGO owns the presses. Your custom t-shirt quote is built from the blank, the decoration, and the quantity tier, with no retail layer on top. Pricing starts at 12 pieces and steps down at 24, 48 and 100-plus, which is why bulk orders are where the gap is widest.

The honest test is to run the same job through both. Upload your logo to any product on our catalog, pick the quantity, and you will see live pricing before you check out. Then do the same on CustomInk. Compare the number after rush and shipping, not before.

Edge: SWAGO

On comparable blanks and print counts, manufacturer-direct pricing comes in under a national retailer. The exception is singles and very small runs, which we cover below.

Round 2

Rush fees: a percentage of your order vs a flat fee

This is the line item buyers miss. CustomInk's published delivery options add roughly 15% of the order for one-week rush and roughly 30% for three-day super rush.1 The fee scales with the order, so the bigger the job, the more a deadline costs.

SWAGO's rush is flat. Standard production is 10 business days at no charge. Rush (7 business days) adds $100 per order. Super rush (5 business days) adds $200. Those are the same numbers on our FAQ.

Worked example on a $2,000 order that needs to ship in about a week:

  • CustomInk one-week rush at 15%: about $300 added.
  • SWAGO rush at a flat fee: $100 added.

Push the deadline tighter and the gap grows. At 30% super rush, that same order carries about $600 in fees against our flat $200. One fairness note: CustomInk's super rush is quoted at three days and ours at 5 business days. If you truly have three days, ask us. We will say yes or no the same day rather than sell you a timeline we cannot hit.

Edge: SWAGO

Flat fees beat percentage fees on every order over a few hundred dollars. The larger and more urgent the job, the more this round is worth.

Round 3

Turnaround and who is accountable for it

CustomInk's standard delivery is about two weeks.1 Ours is 10 business days from proof approval, then UPS Ground from Florida, which reaches most of the country in one to five days. See shipping and turnaround for the full breakdown by state.

The bigger difference is what happens when a date is at risk. At a national retailer your order is one of thousands in a queue, and the person you reach is working from a ticket. At SWAGO you have one account manager, the production board is reviewed by ownership every morning, and a job that is tight gets flagged to someone who can move it. That is the model hotels, restaurant groups and event operators in South Florida have relied on since 1986, because a wrong shirt on a guest-facing team is not a reprint, it is a brand problem.

Edge: SWAGO

Shorter standard turnaround and a named person who answers for it. CustomInk is reliable for routine orders; the edge shows up on the ones that are not routine.

Round 4

Minimums and small runs

CustomInk offers no minimum on select digital-print products, which is a real advantage if you need one shirt.2 Our minimum is 12 pieces per design. Under roughly two dozen pieces we use DTF printing, which reproduces full-color art and gradients with no screen setup. Above that, screen printing is cheaper per piece, and we quote whichever method costs you less.

Edge: CustomInk

For one to ten shirts with no brand standard to match, CustomInk is the right tool. We would rather tell you that than take an order we are not built for.

Round 5

Self-serve design: Design Lab vs Design Studio

CustomInk's Design Lab is a good tool and the reason many people order there: design in the browser, see a price, check out, never talk to anyone. The assumption behind "CustomInk vs a local printer" is that the local printer cannot do that.

SWAGO can. Every product in our catalog opens in the Design Studio. Upload your logo, place it on the front, back or sleeve, pick garment colors and a size run, and the price updates as you change the quantity. Check out online from 12 pieces. No account manager, no call, no quote to wait for. A person still checks your artwork within 24 to 48 hours before it prints, which is the part a self-serve tool cannot do for you.

The difference is what happens when the order outgrows a cart. A uniform program, a restaurant or bar opening, a corporate swag drop, or a cut-and-sew sublimated build moves to an account manager, a written quote and proofs, on the same account. CustomInk's model is built for the first path. We run both.

Edge: SWAGO

Same self-serve experience, lower pricing, plus a bespoke path when you need one. The Design Lab's clipart library is the one thing we do not try to match.

Round 6

Where CustomInk genuinely wins

Singles and tiny runs. Their no-minimum products serve the one-shirt order that our 12-piece minimum does not. Their three-day super rush is faster on paper than our 5-day tier. And their brand recognition matters inside large companies, where procurement sometimes wants a vendor name everyone has heard of. If one of those is your situation, CustomInk is the right call and we will say so.

Two ways to order from SWAGO

CustomInk gives you one path. We give you both, and you can switch between them on the same account.

Self-serve, no phone call

Open any product, upload your logo in the Design Studio, place it on the front, back or sleeve, pick colors and sizes, and watch the price update as you go. Check out online from 12 pieces, 10 business days standard. A person still checks your artwork before it prints. You never have to talk to one unless you want to.

Start in the Design Studio

Bespoke, with a person

Send the brief and an account manager sends back a written all-in quote within one business day, then proofs, then production. This is the path for uniform programs, onboarding kits, multi-location rollouts, cut-and-sew sublimation, and anything with a brand guide to hold. Same presses, same team, a name on the account.

CustomInk vs SWAGO: common questions

Is SWAGO cheaper than CustomInk?

Usually, on comparable orders, and the gap widens on anything with a deadline. CustomInk prices at the premium end of online custom apparel, and its rush options add a percentage of the order total on top. SWAGO quotes manufacturer-direct from our own Miami production floor, with a 12-piece minimum and flat rush fees. Run the same job through both and compare the all-in number.

Does SWAGO charge rush fees like CustomInk?

Yes, but they are flat, not a percentage. Standard turnaround is 10 business days at no charge. Rush production (7 business days) adds $100 per order and super rush (5 business days) adds $200, whether the order is $800 or $8,000. CustomInk's published rush pricing is a percentage of the order, so the fee grows with the order.

CustomInk has no minimum. What is SWAGO's minimum?

12 pieces per design. Below roughly two dozen pieces we print with DTF (direct-to-film), which handles full-color art and small runs well. Above that, screen printing is cheaper per shirt and we quote whichever method costs you less. If you need one or two shirts, CustomInk's no-minimum products are the better fit, and we will tell you so.

Can I design my shirt online like CustomInk's Design Lab?

Yes. Every product on swago.com opens in the Design Studio: upload your logo, place it on the front, back or sleeve, pick colors and sizes, and watch the price update before you check out. It is the same self-serve path CustomInk offers, at manufacturer-direct pricing. A real person still reviews your artwork within 24 to 48 hours before anything prints.

Do I have to talk to someone to order from SWAGO?

No. You can design, price and check out entirely online with no phone call. The account manager path exists for orders that outgrow a cart: uniform programs, onboarding kits, multi-location rollouts, or anything with a brand guide to hold. CustomInk is built for the first path only. We do both, on the same account.

Does SWAGO only serve Miami?

No. We produce everything in Hallandale Beach, Florida and ship nationwide by UPS Ground, which reaches most of the country in one to five business days. South Florida clients can also pick up or visit the shop.

Same self-serve. Better math. A person when you want one.

Design it in the Design Studio and check out tonight, or send the artwork, quantity and date and get a written all-in quote from a person in Miami within one business day.

Self-serve orders check out online with live pricing. Quotes come back from a person in Miami within 1 business day.
