The 8 Best Blank T-Shirts for Custom Screen Printing (2026)

A printer's guide to the best blank t-shirts for screen printing — ring-spun vs. carded cotton, fabric weight, print compatibility, and the exact blanks we recommend for soft-hand prints, budget runs, and premium retail merch.

The blank you print on matters as much as the artwork. A great design on the wrong tee feels cheap, washes poorly, or fights the ink. After printing thousands of orders, here are the blank t-shirts we recommend most for custom screen printing — grouped by what you're trying to accomplish, with the specific styles we stock.

How to choose a blank for screen printing

Before the brand names, three specs decide print quality and feel:

  • Ring-spun vs. carded (open-end) cotton. Ring-spun yarn is twisted smoother, so it's softer and gives a cleaner print surface for fine detail. Carded/open-end (cheaper) is rougher and best for bold, simple designs.
  • Fabric weight (oz / GSM). Lighter 4.0–4.5 oz tees feel modern and retail-soft; heavier 5.3–6.1 oz tees feel substantial and hide print texture. Heavier isn't "better" — it's a different look.
  • Fabric content → ink system. 100% cotton takes any ink. Blends and tri-blends print best with water-based or discharge inks. 100% polyester needs DTF or a poly-specific ink system — standard plastisol will dye-migrate.

Budget workhorses (best value, still printable)

1. Gildan 64000 Softstyleshop it → 4.5 oz, 100% combed ring-spun cotton. The best soft-hand tee for the money. Prints clean, fits modern, and costs barely more than a basic heavyweight. Our default recommendation for events, schools, and giveaways where budget matters but you still want a tee people actually wear.

2. Tultex 202 Fine Jerseyshop it → A genuinely soft ring-spun tee at one of the lowest price points in the catalog. Great for high-volume orders where you want better-than-basic feel without premium pricing.

3. Gildan 3000 Light Cottonshop it → A lighter-weight everyday cotton tee — easy on the budget, reliable for single- and two-color prints, and comfortable in warm climates.

Premium / retail-soft (when feel sells the brand)

4. Next Level 3600shop it → 4.3 oz combed ring-spun cotton with a fashion fit. This is the go-to when the shirt itself is part of the brand — boutiques, premium merch, hospitality, and anything sold rather than given away. Takes a soft-hand water-based print beautifully.

5. Bella+Canvas 3001 family (incl. CVC)shop the 3001 CVC → The retail standard. Airlume combed ring-spun cotton, consistent sizing, and the fit most people expect from a "nice" tee. The CVC blend version dries faster and resists shrinking while still printing reliably with a dye-blocking underbase on darks.

Garment-dyed & heavyweight (the vintage trend)

6. Comfort Colors 1717 Garment-Dyedshop it → 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, pigment garment-dyed for that broken-in, vintage feel. Heavier and pricier, but unbeatable for premium drops, brand merch, and the lived-in aesthetic that's dominating apparel right now. Prints gorgeously with water-based ink.

Blends & tri-blends (drapey, premium hand)

7. Next Level 6010 Tri-Blendshop it → 50% poly / 25% combed cotton / 25% rayon. Lightweight, drapey, and exceptionally soft — a premium retail feel. Print it with water-based or discharge inks; plastisol can sit heavy on tri-blend.

8. 50/50 & CVC cotton-poly blendsbrowse blends → The most popular choice for uniforms and corporate merch: faster-drying, shrink-resistant, and durable through industrial laundering. Print with a proper underbase on colored garments to prevent dye migration.
